Fans have been asking for a reunion of “The Rare” and now after 28 years, it’s finally here!
The Rare is a two woman “band” originally from Richmond, Va. and now they are performing their much anticipated reunion concert at the Tin Pan. Janet Martin (guitars and vocals), performs through out Virginia and Europe and "Betsy Q” Forbes, (bass, keys and vocals) also a popular musician in Virginia and beyond, are both reuniting to play their unique original music. They will be joined by Kris Krull on drums and Cecil Hooker on violin. Cecil joined the Rare in the last 4 years they were performing in the 80’s. They will be performing original music that was written by both Janet and Betsy.
For 10 years, The Rare was greeted with enthusiasm by audiences from New York to Florida doing concerts in colleges and universities and opening for many national acts. They had a huge fan base in Richmond, Charlottesville, Va. Beach, and Norfolk including Nags Head, NC where they were performing regularly as well. The Rare has a unique, eclectic sound that includes beautiful harmony vocals, with mesmerizing rock sounds. Their music has been described as “a special blend of vocals and talent that add a more defined, artistic touch to rock and roll”. It’s original!
Back in the 80’s, they utilized an Emu Systems drumulator in which they wrote all of their drum parts making The Rare sound like a full band. Cecil Hooker, classically trained and still “rocks out”, was a great addition to their sound and they are thrilled he is able to come from New York where he is now living, to join them for this reunion. Cecil was formally from the band “Snuff”.
Since those days with The Rare, Janet has been dividing her performances between the US and Europe since 2004. She has recorded and released 9 CD's to critical acclaim, receiving airplay in 14 countries. Betsy, was a vocalist in several rock bands before The Rare and now performs as “Betsy Q”, a well known musician, performer and songwriter for children and family audiences. Betsy Q has recorded and released 5 CDs.
In this world of here today and gone tomorrow musical fashion,” The Rare” is positively unique. Their music is timeless and will be enjoyed by all....even if your taste is country or reggae, blues or rock and roll; The Rare's music seems to be a blend of all of those genres.
